The Ashfall Forge
The Crucible was the keep's great forge once, before the mountain grew too hot to work it. What is left is Cinderhold, a forge-town of black stone at Ashfall, the foot of the mountain, where the lava river comes out of the rock and runs past Smith Oda's great forge. One stack, one quench tub full of ash, a mine that goes further down than anyone likes to say, and a smith who will not leave and will not ask for help.
The forge-folk of Ashfall mine ember crystal out of the black rock, keep their lamps lit for luck and feast loudly when a shift comes home. Dunstan Coalbeard has forty years under the mountain. Forgewife Hesta keeps the Crucible from bursting. Sizzle, a very small imp, has sworn to be good, mostly, and brings pies.
Something old sleeps under the Caldera. The Ash Hermit calls it Ignar, the first fire, and it is waking. It calls to everything that burns: the golems walk, the thralls shuffle, and the mountain keeps trying to put Oda's forge out. The Ashfall Forge means to hammer back.
