The Lakewardens

Keepers of the lakes, rivers and fish. Patient, calm, and a little strange about the big ones.

The Lakewardens have no hall and no banner, only a hook worn on a string and a way of sitting very still. They keep the waters: the Ashwood ponds, the oasis pool, the black tarns under the ice, the drowned pools of the fen and the Starwells in the sky. They count the fish, they mend the banks, and they put back what is too small.

Old Barnaby Reel keeps their tackle shop by the Ashwood pond, and Old Pike Tomsen says he taught Barnaby everything, which Barnaby denies. Ernest Hemingfrost is the oldest of them, and the one they listen to. He says the fish are thinking slow cold thoughts under the ice, and that if you sit long enough you can hear them.

Every Lakewarden believes in the great fish. Not the ones you catch, the ones that choose to be caught. Old Whiskers, the Mirage Koi, Mother Murk, Heaven's Eye. They say each one is a water's memory, and that it only rises for someone who has earned it. Most anglers laugh at that. Most anglers have never caught one.
