The Last Pilgrims
When the citadel of Crownfall broke away from the world, its court never noticed. They still hold petitions in the Court of Winds, their guard still keeps the duty roll, and their herald still waits to announce a king who lost his crown.
The Last Pilgrims climb the Sky Stair to lay that court to rest. At the top they found the citadel's lower ward in ruins and moved into it: Pilgrim's Haven, huts of fallen marble under the canvas of the tents they climbed with, prayer flags from pole to pole, a cairn with a stone from every pilgrim who made it, and a little domed chapel of the old court that never fell. Mother Ysolde leads them, old and patient, and keeps a kettle on the fire in the square. The tea is always too hot.
Ser Caddoc climbs with them. He swore to the fallen king three hundred years ago and has been climbing ever since, which tells you how long the Stair is. The Court Scribe is writing the history of the fall and has reached the part where the court ate lunch. Amelia Airheart took forty years to climb the Stair and has no intention of walking back down. West of the Haven, where the citadel tore away from the mountain, the old Kingsway bridge runs out over the clouds and stops.
