The Order of the Dawn
The Order of the Dawn is older than the cathedral, which it built twice, and older than the bell tower, which it built three times because Ding Crosby keeps ringing it too hard. Its rule is short: tend the sick, bury the dead, light a lamp for anyone still out on the road, and be up before the sun. The sun has never once been late. The Order would like some of the credit.
Florence Lightingale leads it from the almshouse more than from the altar, with a lamp at her belt and her sleeves rolled up. Sister Julie Amens keeps its stores in Dawn Close: candles, linen, lamp oil and an inventory she can sing from memory, and frequently does.
Other classes are welcome at the services and at the soup. The Order itself is for priests, because somebody has to know which end of the censer to swing, and it is not the end that is on fire.
