The Rimegate Watch

The keep's wardens and the one Hoarfolk clan that never raided, holding the pass together from a village on the ice.

For thirty winters the Watch held Rimegate Pass from four tents at Wardens' Rest. Then the cold came down off the White Veil, and the Mere-clan, the one Hoarfolk clan that fishes instead of raiding, took the wardens in at Hearthmere, their longhouses on the far shore of the frozen Stillmere. The clan feeds the Watch; the Watch keeps the road. Old Sten would not leave his fire, and still cooks at the Rest for anyone who comes up the pass.

The Watch is Warden Halvard, Hroska the hunter who keeps its stores, and anyone the pass has not frozen yet: Ernest Hemingfrost in his shanty on the ice, a prospector who came for rimesilver and found a glacier that walks, and a sled dog called Pickle who runs off after anything that squeaks. The clan is Ulf the Loud, its chief, and Grandmother Ymma, who keeps the longhall fire and the old law, and has never once agreed that either needs changing.

The Hoarfolk clans were here before the keep, and have never once agreed that it was a good idea. Their war braziers burn day and night at the Steading. But the Watch fears something worse: the frostcallers have woken a heart of old ice at the White Veil, and it is teaching the glacier to walk down the mountain.
