Lanternwatch

A wall of green lamps at the edge of the drowned wood, and the watch that keeps them lit.

Lanternwatch was a stake wall and two tents at the edge of the drowned wood. It is a village now, of gray plank houses up on stilts on the shore of the Gloamwater and out over the black water, joined by boardwalks, with a green lamp on every post. The dead climb out of the fen every night and walk up the road like they have somewhere to be, and stop at the lamps. Everyone agrees the lamps keep them away. Nobody has asked the dead.

The watch is soldiers and more than soldiers: Brother Aldo, who keeps the names of the dead and says them aloud so they rest; the Boatman, whose ferry no longer runs and whose son ran off to be a student at the tower; Wynn Weller, who keeps the Last Light and her father, the lamplighter, who says he drowned at midwinter; and the Reed Widow, who would very much like her husband's ring back from the lurker that swallowed it.

At the far end of the fen stands the Pale Tower, where the keep's old court magister keeps a register of every soul he raises and a class of gray-robed students who think it is all very clever. Lanternwatch keeps a register too. Theirs is of the names they have put back to sleep, and it is getting longer.
